You’ve heard us say it before—district leadership is essential for success and sustainability in RTI2-B. Lakeland Schools are a great example of how district leadership can support implementation. Check out this great End of Year Checklist provided by the district coach to the school RTI2-B team coaches. Even without district support, this checklist is a great guide in wrapping up RTI2-B for the year and making plans for success in the next school year. Dyersburg Primary School’s Student Leadership Team

Dyersburg Primary School (DPS) is excelling in their implementation of a student leadership team, and we are excited to share their story with you! Learn more about how to share your story and be featured in a monthly spotlight HERE.

The student leadership team at DPS consists of students who are selected by their peers to represent their class on the team. They have a lunch meeting twice annually with the DPS administrative team. On the agenda, we discuss the school rules and if the students feel the rules are important and helpful to everyone at the school. Finally, we discuss how they would like to change our school rules and procedures. Additionally, we discuss and update the DPS compact with the students—specifically the part that has to do with what students can do to ensure they are successful at school.  Interestingly, they suggested that we add that students should be responsible and come to school regularly—very wise! 

The compact for the 2018-19 school year is pictured below. At the bottom of the second page you can see the portion that is about DPS students. The suggestion about attendance will be added to the compact for the 2019-2020 school year and suggestions from other stakeholders will be included as well.

Check out this great idea to acknowledge teachers from Ross Elementary School! Each month, one teacher is recognized for excellent work across a variety of content areas, including consistently modeling their school-wide expectations of the 3 Rs (Respect, Responsibility, Ready). Just like our students, teachers love to be recognized for their hard work. In training, we talk about how important staff behavior change is in RTI2-B. If we have expectations for our students, we must model those expectations for them! Moreover, if administrators want teachers recognize students for good behavior, they can practice what they preach by recognizing good teacher behavior! You’ve heard us say it 100 times—administrative support is key to transform school climate!

At Ross Elementary, the Teacher of the Month enjoys a their very own parking spot, a certificate from administration, their photo on a bulletin board, acknowledgement on morning and afternoon announcements, a recognition banner above their classroom door, a gift basket, and they get to pull something out of an incentive grab bag. What an amazing list of rewards! Check out the photos of some of these great reinforcers below!

February Monthly Spotlight: Holice Powell Elementary!

We had fun celebrating our students who have been demonstrating positive behaviors the 2nd nine weeks. These students demonstrated our Choctaw Pride Expectations which are Have Respect, Prepare Yourself, and Show Responsibility. We had an animal show and the students were even able to hold a blue and gold macaw, red footed tortoise, and an albino corn snake.

January Monthly Spotlight: Altruria Elementary School!

We took a short hiatus from the monthly spotlight in December for the holidays, but we’re happy to be back sharing stories of great work happening in our region. Thank you, Altruria Elementary, for sharing your story with us! We are excited about the work you are doing.

Altruria Elementary's RTI2-Behavior Team wanted to improve attendance by rewarding students who attend school all day every day. The team created a quarterly HERO (Here - Every day - Ready - On time) Party to celebrate these students. The first HERO party was a Glow Dance Party. Students who qualified with perfect attendance for the first quarter and E's or G's in conduct got to dance to some of their favorite tunes in a dark gym with black lights and glow sticks for each student. Each HERO party will have a different theme and will take place after each quarter, so students who did not qualify to attend the first party will have 3 more chances to attend. The students and staff had a great time!

November Monthly Spotlight-Lakeland Middle Preparatory School!

Lakeland Middle Preparatory School’s LIONS recently celebrated our students’ Quarter 1 behavior by hosting our 1st “Mane Money” Rewards Store. Students earn “Mane Money” for following our R.O.A.R. expectations (Responsible, Outstanding, Accountable, and Respectful). They are able to spend their “Mane Money” on glow sticks, sunglasses, tattoos, vampire teeth, fidget spinners, bouncy balls, Frisbees, and more. Students also earned “Peace Days” for their R.O.A.R. behavior and got to wear silly socks or hats all day.

October Monthly Spotlight-Family and Community Engagement in Humboldt City Schools!

Humboldt City Schools recently finished our first Family and Community Engagement in RTI2-B Training! They are off to a great start with plans to engage stakeholders in new and exciting ways. Check out these photos from our training and the flyer below for one of their first events!

September Monthly Spotlight-Lakeland Elementary School!

Lakeland Elementary started the school year out with a bang as we had a kickoff party for our ROAR (Responsible, Outstanding, Accountable, and Respectful) program. The Lakeland Elementary cheerleaders got everyone pumped by greeting students as they came into the gym. All of our students participated in an assembly that included cheers, a review of expectations, and 'how to' videos of great ROAR behavior in the cafeteria, hallway, and bathroom. Our assistant principal, Mrs. Sharonda Rose, put together a great program along with our ROAR team.

August Monthly Spotlight-Lauderdale Co. Schools!

Lauderdale County Schools is going above and beyond in their implementation of RTI2-Behavior. We love their creative idea to use a weekly behavior focus which are then tied to words of the day. What a great way to encourage a strong vocabulary and variety of healthy social-emotional skills! Great work, LCS!

July Monthly Spotlight-Our First FACE Cohort

We are excited to announce that we will have all of Humboldt City Schools participating in our first ever Family and Engagement Team training in August!  These schools are doing fantastic work in their implementation of RTI2-B, so we are thrilled to see how they will be even more successful by engaging families and communities in their RTI2-B work. 

June Monthly Spotlight-Bartlett City Schools!

Bartlett City Schools are doing an excellent job using data to inform decision-making at the school and district levels. Check out their strategy below!

Bartlett City Schools 20-Day Period School Discipline Data Process:

Every 20-day period, at the district level, discipline data is reviewed for all schools. The information is shared through charts and graphs with district level staff, and principals. Below is how the information is disseminated:

District Level data:

  1. Overall numbers of exclusionary consequences for all schools for the 20-day period is shared with the superintendent and directors. This data includes numbers of:
    • In-School Suspension
    • Out-Of-School Suspensions
    • Expulsions
  2. Period comparison of exclusionary consequence from the 1st 20-day period to the current 20-day period.
  3. Exclusionary consequence comparison of all schools (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  4. Exclusionary consequence comparison of Elementary school and Middle schools.

School Level Data: All principals receive the following:

  • A data sheet showing how many exclusionary consequences (ISS, OSS & Expulsions) were entered by each administrator at the school for the 20-day period.
  • Overall numbers of exclusionary consequences for all schools for the 20-day period.
  • Period comparison of exclusionary consequence from the 1st 20-day period to the
  • current 20-day period for all schools.
  • Exclusionary consequence by ethnicity.

School Action: Schools could use the data to do the following:

  • Drill down to specific students and incidents.
  • Drill down to grade level and teacher.
  • Find area of school where incidents frequently occur.
  • Implement appropriate interventions and supports to address behaviors.

May Monthly Spotlight-Fifth Consolidated!

Fifth Consolidated is providing unique opportunities for students as rewards for good behavior. Check out their story below! We love your creativity, Fifth Consolidated!

"One of the most popular rewards students of all ages at Fifth Consolidated can buy at our school store, Tribe-Mart, is to be Assistant Principal. Each student will spend a thirty minute session as assistant principal. The student will function with various duties including checking on classrooms, communicating with the secretary, monitoring the hallway, and using the walkie-talkie.

Another choice in high demand is to eat lunch with one of the principals. Pictured is a group of fifth graders that spent points to eat lunch at our local Chick-Fil-A with Assistant Principal Joey Harrison.

Reward parties each nine weeks have also been well received among the students. Most recently, our Neon Dance Party was a big hit! Students danced the afternoon away thanks to their "glowing" behavior."

April Monthly Spotlight-Power Center Academy Elementary!

The West TBSP team is excited about how PCA Elementary is engaging families in their RTI2-B program! Check out their story below:

"Starting in 2015, Power Center Academy Elementary School is continuously growing and currently serves over 500 K-3 graders. Realizing the impact of acknowledging the good choices and behaviors of our scholars through lots of positive narration and Squire Bucks (token economy) for exhbiting positive behaviors, we reached out to our Parent Action Committee to gain support from our families for components of our PBIS program. We realized the need for their support in order to make all components of our PBIS program sustainable. 

Our parents kindly support teachers with their classroom requests and are fully on board as they give freely to our scholars! Parental support ensures that Power Center Academy Elementary School is able to provide over 10,000 items for scholars to enjoy when they spend their Squire Bucks in the Mega-Squire Store and this helps to reinforce the building of intrinsic motivation in our scholars to make positive choices. Moreover, our parents help us to keep alive the old adage, "it takes a village" as their support goes along way in ensuring all scholars celebrated! Pictured here is Mrs. Rogers, PAC President 2017-2018 and one of our most active parents, Mrs. Jones, parent of Jerry Jones- 3rd grader. Mrs. Jones regularly shops for our scholars, and brings trunk loads of gifts. Mrs. Jones sets up the Mega-Squire Store, is always dependable and selfless in giving her time to PCAES' PBIS programs! We salute all of our parents and extend a super special shout out to Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Jones!"

February Monthly Spotlight: Lauderdale County!

With any PBIS program, it can be difficult to get buy-in from your staff. Lauderdale County is experiencing great success with their RTI2/B staff reinforcement program. Below, we have included testimonials from Ripley High School and Halls High School.

“Each student was given 1 ROAR ticket. During the week, they had to catch a teacher exhibiting one of the ROAR traits (Responsibility, Optimism, Accountability, Respect). They had to circle the trait and write on the back specifically what the teacher had done to show that trait. Tickets were counted up by grade to find the teacher who received the most tickets in that grade level. The actions were read over the PA system and the 4 winning teachers were given the option to take an early out during the last block of the day or lunch off campus… Most students focused on optimism and respect. They reported teachers who always greeted them with a friendly greeting. Teachers who help them when they don’t understand. Teachers who care. I felt this was probably because those are the traits they crave the most from adults.”

“We began our RTI2/B program with the thought that teachers should be receiving cards as well.  So, we do giveaways/drawings for the teachers first and then we do drawings for the students each nine weeks. The tickets are separated into two different pots each time. You might not be able to tell from the picture below, but one of our teacher winners is standing in the middle back row.  Mr. Pike received a ticket from a student and was drawn for the ‘Wear Jeans for a Week’ prize.  Ms. Joni Ketchum was not in the picture, but her name was drawn for the ‘Leave Campus and Eat Lunch with a Buddy’ prize.  Teachers are always fighting for that one!! We have also had students turn in tickets for bus drivers as well.  So far, they haven’t been drawn for a prize, but if we draw their name, we will come up with something creative to give them that doesn’t cost very much.  It’s fun and the students enjoy having the ability to praise someone when they do something nice.  We all deserve it!!!!”
